As we are well aware, smoking is becoming less and less acceptable in public and more smokers are telling me that they feel persecuted and marginalized than at any other time. Given the cost (in both monetary and social stigma terms) the number of people trying to kick the habit has never been higher. However, just giving up isn't that easy. People try all sorts of aids to giving up from patches to Zyban, acupuncture to straight willpower, sometimes successful and sometimes not. Hypnotherapy has a good track record in helping people to overcome the cravings that they inevitably will feel at some point and I have worked with many people over the years, assisting them to break the habit. During the time I have practised hypnotherapy in chesterfield I have noticed four main misconceptions that people have about giving up smoking, these are:
The longer I have smoked for the harder it is to give up, some people feeling that because they have smoked all their adult and adolescent) life it is too late for them. This is wrong, it will be no harder for them to give up that someone who has only smoked for a year - the actual physiological addiction only takes about three days to break; it's the habit that's harder and takes generally about three months.
I have no will power therefore I cant give up. Wrong, actually noone ever gives up anything by using will power for the reason that to use your will power you actually have to be thinking about the thing you are using your will power on; in other words, to stop smoking using willpower you would need to be constantly thinking about smoking - the last thing you need to be doing.
If I wasn't smoking what else would I be doing with my hands/ time. In the event this is a non issue although most smokers believe it is going to be, as I often point out, you aren't worrying what to do with your head because you aren't bashing it against a brick wall are you?
If I stop smoking I will put on weight. there is some truth to this, either because foodactually tastes so good now that your taste buds aren't being overwhelmed by tobacco or because one habit (smoking) is being replaced with another (eating) in which case the underlying issue as to why a habit is needed at all needs addressing, Hypnotherapy is a great help with this.
